Hey there!

If you're searching for a tribe of southern homesteaders to belong to, you've found the perfect place. This site is designed to bring farmsteaders together to network, learn, and flourish on their homesteading journeys.

Homesteading is more than a lifestyle; it's a commitment to sustainable living, self-sufficiency, and community. By reclaiming traditional skills, engaging in sustainable practices, and embracing the natural rhythms of the land, you can create a resilient and rewarding homestead. Come Grow With Us!

Why Homesteading Matters

Homesteading provides a path to a more sustainable, self-reliant, and fulfilling life. Here are some key reasons why homesteading is important:

Sustainability

By growing your own food and utilizing natural resources, you reduce your environmental footprint. Homesteading promotes eco-friendly practices that benefit both the planet and future generations. Sustainable practices like composting, rainwater harvesting, and crop rotation not only improve soil health but also contribute to a cleaner, greener environment.

Self-Sufficiency

Homesteading fosters independence. Growing your own food, raising animals, and producing your own energy means you rely less on external systems and more on your own capabilities. This self-sufficiency extends to preserving food, making household products, and even generating your own energy through solar or wind power. The skills you develop as a homesteader can be invaluable in times of economic uncertainty or supply chain disruptions.

Health Benefits

Consuming fresh, organic produce and engaging in physical labor improves overall health. The act of working in the soil has been shown to reduce stress and improve mental well-being. Physical activities such as gardening, tending to animals, and manual labor associated with homesteading promote physical fitness, while the connection with nature enhances mental health. Furthermore, knowing exactly what goes into your food and how it’s grown allows for healthier eating habits and a more balanced diet.

Community and Connection

Homesteading connects you with like-minded individuals. Sharing knowledge and resources creates a strong, supportive community that can help each other thrive. Local community exchanges, farmers' markets, and social gatherings such as our Fall Farmstead Forum and Homestead Business Networking Event foster these connections. These communities are invaluable for sharing experiences, trading goods, and providing encouragement and support during challenging times.

Economic Savings

Producing your own goods can significantly cut down on grocery and utility bills. It also offers opportunities to create a homestead-based business. By diversifying your homestead’s outputs—such as selling produce, homemade products, or even offering workshops—you can create multiple streams of income. This diversification not only secures your financial situation but also highlights the economic viability of a self-sustained lifestyle.

Resources

Embrace Herbal Medicine

Interested in expanding your herbal medicine education? Check out the AARM program, a fantastic resource I found incredibly useful. This program offers courses and certifications in herbal medicine, blending traditional knowledge with modern scientific understanding. Whether you're a healthcare professional or simply interested in natural remedies, AARM provides comprehensive training to integrate herbal practices into your life.

If you're not in the medical profession but want to grow or forage herbs for medicine in the southeast US, Suzanne Shire's book is a must-read. Her book covers the identification, harvesting, and usage of native herbs, with detailed illustrations and practical advice. One of my new favorites is Yarrow, pictured below. Yarrow has been used for centuries for its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, making it a valuable addition to any homestead medicine cabinet.

Embracing herbal medicine on your homestead can lead to a healthier, more self-sustained lifestyle. Growing your own medicinal herbs ensures that you have access to fresh, potent remedies whenever needed. Plus, it reduces dependence on commercial pharmaceuticals, promoting natural health solutions.

Master Gardener

Ever dreamed of becoming a master gardener? I completed the program last year with Carroll County in GA and found it truly rewarding (except for the turf section!). This program, offered by the UGA extension and other land-grant universities, involves a combination of volunteer work, book learning, and field trips.

Volunteer Work: As part of the program, participants contribute to community gardens, conduct educational workshops, and assist with local agricultural projects. These activities not only provide practical experience but also foster a sense of community and service.

Book Learning: The academic portion covers a wide range of topics, from soil science and plant pathology to pest management and landscape design. This comprehensive education equips you with the knowledge to create and maintain a thriving garden.

Field Trips: Hands-on learning through field trips to botanical gardens, research facilities, and exemplary private gardens offers real-world applications of classroom knowledge. Seeing successful gardening practices firsthand can inspire and instruct on best practices.

Contact your local Ag office to see if this program is available in your community. Becoming a master gardener not only enhances your own gardening skills but also enables you to contribute to the broader community by sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm. Good luck with your gardening!

Homestead Business

Marketing your homestead business can be straightforward with the right tools. Here are some quick tips:

Leverage Social Media: With over 4 billion active users, social media is a powerful tool. Engage with your audience and promote your products on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Share daily updates, success stories, and special offers to create an engaged and loyal customer base.

Cost-effective Advertising: Social media advertising is budget-friendly, starting as low as $1/day. Perfect for small businesses. Targeted ads can reach specific demographics interested in homesteading products and services, ensuring your marketing efforts are efficient and effective.

Consumer Engagement: Positive experiences on social media lead to word-of-mouth marketing and brand loyalty. Utilize these platforms to build a strong community around your brand. Regularly engage with your audience through comments, messages, and interactive content like polls and Q&As.

Boost Sales Performance: Salespeople using social media often outperform those who don’t. Incorporate social media strategies into your sales approach to enhance customer relationships and drive sales. Highlight customer testimonials, share behind-the-scenes stories, and use live streams to showcase new products and services.
